Advances in POME treatment methods: potentials of phycoremediation, with a focus on South East Asia

The discharge of palm oil mill effluent (POME) without effective treatment is highly toxic to the environment and receiving waters due its high chemical oxygen demand , biochemical increased levels suspended solids. ponding system regarded as a conventional method for POME but requires long retention time extensive areas. Other processes, such physicochemical treatment, have also been applied tertiary steps ensure lower toxicity discharge. More recently, phycoremediation, new biological using microalgae, has reported having great potential in being efficient reducing environmental impact POME. This paper discusses feasibility above methods POME, including with focus on their application South East Asia.
